sunk deeply into the edge of the living room sofa with his blue laptop balanced on the sofa's arm and his feet propped on the coffee table, the young man sat with squinted eyes staring at his computer screen. finances. certainly not toby's favorite part of running their own place. he had always found his own personal banking and later his and sadie's combined banking difficult to manage. now, he was somewhat overwhelmed. how much did he need to divvy out to their small staff? that much for the next month's horse feed? happily, they were blessed with benefactors happy to help and enough "tuition" from the students, or more commonly the government, to keep everything covered and yet he couldn't help but stress. it was just his nature to let everything that serious eat at him. pressing two fingers to his left temple, toby reluctantly transferred some funds, a little discontented groan passing through his lips.
drawing his eyes away from the glowing screen, toby took a look around the room, admiring the unusual cleanness. he had made a pact with sadie to get the place clean that past saturday and after a good bit of fooling around had gotten serious and put everything back in its place. as busy as they both were these days, and as happy as they were to have time alone for pretty much the first time in their relationship, getting things like housework done sometimes got shoved aside for longer than it should. a fond smile crossed his face as his eyes zoned out as they stared at the smooth ceiling, transported back to that morning two days ago. neither of them had wanted to get out of bed, despite knowing their responsibilities they had set for each other. even with his face pressed against her stomach, breathing in her sweet feminine scent, and his fingers toying with the waistband of her sleep pants, horribly tempted, he had told her distractedly, we really need to go clean, only to elicit her agreement and carry on with their activities. a year since they'd moved in together, and they were still in full honeymoon mode. four years of intense make-out sessions and only the occasional opportunity to go any further, and they both seemed rather intent on making up for lost time. anyway, they were toying somewhat with the concept of a baby, resolving to let it happen when it happened. was there a more perfect excuse?
to get his mind off his wife, whose attractiveness, once in his mind, stuck there for some time and distracted him to the point of foolishness, not a good thing while banking, opened the simple hearts game that came basic on almost all computers. sometimes, he could swear he was still a teenager, and not in the good sort of way. after the ten rounds were up, toby beaten sorely by the "north" computer player, he shut the game, staring at the online banking for a minute, trying to remember what all needed to be done just then. managing to put the transaction through on their water bill, no joke of a figure considering the number of people on campus taking showers everyday, never mind the barn usage, toby once more became distracted by the oddball thought that wormed into his mind: baby names. now why such a thing would come to his mind perplexed him, but he gave into the desire he considered somewhat girlie, opening up the first site that pulled up on google--nameberry. looking through some of their lists from different categories, he got just a touch excited at the thought of picking out a name for the baby not yet in existence, at least to his knowledge. scratching the base of his neck, just inside the collar, he switched tabs on his browser quickly when he heard a key in the lock, a precaution they took more against unwanted students than any other danger, gazing boyishly back over the couch at her with a little, somewhat guilty, smile, hoping everything had gone okay with her doctor's appointment. that little stomach bug had worried him a bit.

life is full of complexities little oddities we can't ever really understand Sadie Jackson stared at the doctor as he smiled at her. "I..you're serious?" she asked, still slightly blown away as the doctor nodded and told her, yet again, that he was serious. She wasn't sure why this was so shocking. She had known it was a possibility. They hadn't exactly been actively trying to get pregnant, they'd just sort of stopped trying to not get pregnant. Still, for some reason, when she'd come in for this exam, this was not what she had been anticipating. Although, she supposed, truly it all made sense. She'd been expecting to have the flu or something, just a little stomach bug, but pregnant? "When will we be able to find out if it's a boy or a girl?" she asked. "Not til about 20 weeks" the doctor told her with a slight little smile. "And you think I'm about four weeks?" she asked, and received a nod. "Yes, everything looks good. Excellent, in fact. I'd avoid riding horses and such if I were you, and...erm, perhaps the more violent students?" Being a small town doctor, of course, Dr. Milfree knew exactly what Sadie and Toby did for a living. Sadie could tell that he was trying to delicately address something he thought might be a little sticky, and she appreciated his concern and his honesty, and, truthfully, she couldn't really blame him. Just a few weeks ago, she'd had to wrestle a rather violent fifteen year old to the ground. "Yes, of course" she said with a slight smile. "We'll see you back in another two weeks, then, to do an ultrasound. We should be able to pick up a heart beat by then" Sadie gave a broad smile. "Wonderful. Thank you so much, Dr. Milfree."
With a rather funny feeling in the pit of her stomach, Sadie made her way back out to her car, trying to come to grips with this exciting news. She crawled into the rather beat up little old red Taurus. Despite the thing's condition, she rather liked it, and it still ran like a champ. She shook her head. "Get a grip, Sadie. Pull yourself together, girl" she said out loud. One hand slid to her belly, where some new little life was growing inside of her. A huge smile slowly started to crack across her features. They were going to be parents! The thought finally hit her, and, in a whirlwind, images started flashing through her mind. Holding the hands of a little girl who looked mostly like Sadie, with her blond hair and blue eyes as she learned to walk. Or Toby throwing a football with a son who was his spitting image. She smiled at the thought. Which would it be? Boy or girl? Her gut instinct said little girl. Or maybe it was just wishful thinking. She could just see Toby taking care of a little girl, though. She'd be a daddy's girl, but look like her momma. What would they name her? Sadie rather liked Abigaile. Abby. It was just cute in her mind. But, she thought to herself, isn't it a little early to be thinking of names? You don't even know if it's a boy or a girl yet. Besides, does Toby even like the name Abigaile? All of her thoughts, it seemed, circled back around to Toby. God, he was going to be a great father, despite his own reservations. He was so great with all the other kids--why wouldn't be be just as good or even better with his own? With a smile, she put the car into gear and pulled out of the parking lot. She still had to get groceries.

A considerable amount of time later, Sadie found herself pulling into the driveway and up to the little house that she and Toby called home. She loved the little place. It was small, but it was cute, and homey. And more than that, it was theirs. It was the place that belonged to her and Toby alone, their first, and that in and of itself made the place special in Sadie's mind and in her heart. With a smile, she turned the car off, grabbed the keys, popped the trunk, and started grabbing the few grocery bags she had. The list hadn't been extensive, as it hadn't been that long since she'd been shopping, but Toby had insisted, after she got sick yet again, that she go into the doctor, and, being as they didn't make it into town very often, she had figured she might as well grab some of the things they needed. Meals, particularly dinner in the evenings, was something they tried to do faithfully, as they didn't get a ton of other time together, and so Sadie liked to have the cupboards stocked, even though she probably could have just raided the kitchen in the big house or something. She didn't like to do that, though. Their life was crazy enough as it was, not that she would trade it for anything in the world, but cooking their own meals somehow afforded them some sense of normalcy.
She slipped her key into the lock and turned it, sliding inside and closing the door behind her using her foot, laden down with bags as she was. She dumped the grocery bags unceremoniously on the kitchen counter, dropped her purse and her sunglasses on the table and wandered over to the couch to flop down next to Toby, pressing a kiss to his lips before her gaze redirected to his computer screen, taking in the online banking that he had apparently been working on. "Are we doing okay?" she asked, a frown creasing her pretty features. Money always made Sadie a little nervous. It seemed like they barely had enough of it. She budgeted faithfully, never bought anything expensive, 90% of the clothes she owned these days were second hand. They probably had more room to breathe than that, but Sadie didn't mind, and it made her feel a little better about spending money if she was only spending a little at a time. "What do you want for supper?" she added curiously, pressing another kiss to his cheek before pulling herself up and making her way into the kitchen to put away the groceries, her mind rolling through ideas for dinner as she worked, humming a little to herself as she did so. Sadie had been a hummer for as long as she could remember. She hummed even more than she daydreamed, and that was saying something.
Speaking of daydreams, she was lost in one now, thinking again of the small life growing inside of her, once again lost in images of their son or daughter throughout the course of his or her life. Sadie had always been a dreamer, and she had been excited to be a mother almost since she got married, even though it would have been ridiculous at the time. She couldn't imagine trying to raise a child at Brinley. They didn't even live together, for goodness sake. It would have been a complete and utter catastrophe, in Sadie's mind. At the very least, it would have been crazy, and ridiculous, and foolish. Now, though, now they were settled. They had the space, they had the money. They didn't exactly have the time, as they were crazy busy as it was, but they were young, they could handle the schedule. What better time was there than now? She smiled a little to herself as she put the butter and a carton of eggs in the fridge, still humming to herself, in a ridiculously good mood for someone who had just come back from an "ordinary" doctor's appointment and an "average" day of grocery shopping. Only nine months and she would be shopping for three of them, instead of just two! The girl could hardly contain herself, she was so giddy. It was a wonder she hadn't burst out with her secret already, but she knew how she was going to tell Toby, and she was determined not to spoil the surprise...

watching his wife struggle in the door with all the bags, he moved a bit, as though about to get up. "you need help," he asked, though he knew she wasn't likely to take him up on it. when she dropped everything on the counter, he lounged back down into the couch with a little shrug, his eyes refocusing on the numbers so long as she was there to possibly catch him looking at baby names. toby had too strong a sense of masculinity, at least when it came to sadie, to be caught doing something like that. why baby names were a girly thing to look at in his mind, he couldn't be sure, because surely they'd have to settle down someday with a book or one of these websites and pick out a few possible names. his mouth cracked a little grin as she unceremoniously flopped down next to him; he loved how she flopped like that when she went to sit down, so unreserved, at least with him. the grin slipped away when she kissed him, replaced by a contented little smile, a satisfied "mmm" noise coming from him. he lived for sweet little kisses like that. setting his hand on her lower thigh, close to her knee, he shrugged slightly at her question and nodded his head a bit. "i mean, we won't exactly be going on any shopping sprees anytime soon, but we're doing good enough," he said quietly, knowing she tended to stress about money. so did he, to be honest, but it was a different sort of worry. especially when it came to food, toby was a stockpiler, something sadie was still adjusting to. having gone so long not having enough food, toby was constantly worried they'd run out and bought ridiculous quantities of certain essentials like bread and peanut butter. on top of that, he tended to freak anytime they were running low on something like milk, refusing to ever let the jug get all the way empty before one of them drove into town for more. he and sadie both had something of a silent understanding of why he was that way, never really discussing it, just accommodating the absurdity of it.
"um, how about fish? fish sounds good, if you have any," he said a bit distractedly as he sent another payment for their credit card. he pulled his eyes away from the computer when she kissed his cheek, smiling just slightly. logging out of his banking account and shutting the browser, he put the top down on the laptop and set it aside on the coffee table and started to follow his wife into the kitchen. her humming made him smile as he pulled the bag away from the jug of milk and opened the fridge. setting the jug inside on the shelf, he crossed the room to the counter, leaning against it as she put the last few things away. since she did most of the cooking, he let her put the bulk of the items away simply because he didn't like to put things where she would have trouble finding them. watching her move around the kitchen, he smiled slightly to himself, lost in his own thoughts. though not a dreamer like her, he had his moments, times like now when his mind wandered to the future. their efforts to start a family had been rather valiant indeed, mostly due to him. he had no idea how long it would take or, who knew, if it could even happen. he had no reason to believe it could not, but he hoped that wasn't the case. still, at twenty-three he was ready for this new step, even if many of his old friends around the same age were no where near that. but toby had always been a bit ahead of them, marrying as young as he had. all he could imagine, though, as he gazed at his wife was a daughter who looked not unlike the pictures he had seen of sadie as a child. a small, innocent face with a nose cuter than anything, surrounded by masses of curly blond hair. a fantasy, to be sure, but he could dream of such an idealized possibility. toby had, oddly enough, always wanted daughters, finding boys too high-strung. not that he would mind a son, his preference just leaned toward daughters, two or three of them.
when she was done with putting the food away he slipped up behind her, wrapping his arms around her with a smile across his lips. pushing her thin shirt up just a bit, he ran his fingers along her abdomen, having no idea that to her the gesture could be one of double meaning. "you're in an awfully good mood," he insinuated, taking a hand from where it was wrapped around her to push her hair aside, allowing him to brush his lips along the nape of her neck. taking his lips away, he rested his forehead in the crook of her neck, his eyes shut for just a minute, enjoying a little bit of cuddle time so long as she was there. his eyes popping open, he piped up a bit suddenly, "wanna go out for dinner tonight, instead?" shrugging a bit, he smiled slyly as he let her go, "if this date can actually make it off the property," he added with a grin, his lips twisted in a self-satisfied smirk. they tried to do date nights, even if they were at home, weekly, but for the past few months they had failed quite miserably. as into each other as they were in general combined with a more that perfect excuse for moving their date to the bedroom, they hadn't made it out of the house, or in the case of one night, past the car. it was a truly terrible thing, indeed. relaxing into a chair at their little table for two, he gazed at her for a long moment, taking in her appearance. "have i mentioned you look really nice today," he asked with a sweet little grin.
